The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, introduced in 1957, emerged as the open-top successor to the iconic “Gullwing” coupé, largely at the insistence of U.S. importer Max Hoffman, who recognized the demand for a high-performance sports car with conventional doors. While retaining the sophisticated 3.0L straight-six engine with direct fuel injection, which was revolutionary for its time and produced around 215-225 hp, the Roadster featured significant modifications to its tubular space frame to allow for traditional hinged doors.
This redesign also brought an improved rear suspension with a low-pivot single-joint swing axle and a compensating spring, greatly enhancing handling and ride comfort compared to its coupé counterpart. With its blend of breathtaking performance, elegant styling, and open-air driving experience, the 300 SL Roadster seamlessly continued the legend of its predecessor, remaining a very desirable classic car today, with 1,858 units manufactured before production ended in 1963.

The car has been with its current owner since 1995 and underwent a professional body-off restoration completed in December 2021, with extensive records available. The restoration aimed for maximum originality, with only a smaller diameter steering wheel and power steering added for improved driving experience. The quality of the restoration has been highly praised by experts, confirming it to be an “exceptional 300 SL Roadster which was received a very accurate, as per factory, full restoration.”
