McLaren Sabre for Sale in Monterey
The gloves are coming off as the entire collector car world prepares for the 2022 Monterey Car Week! Mecum announced that they will be offering one of only 15 examples of the extremely customized, or bespoke McLaren Sabre for sale at their auction on August 19.
McLaren built 15 examples of the Sabre that were exclusively intended for sale in the US market and the one that’s crossing the auction block is chassis number 11. Both a hypercar and an oddly pleasant ride for a long road trip – now that’s a movie we’d like to see – McLaren refers to the Sabre as “a show car for the road.”
The non-hybrid V8 has twin-turbos and sends 824 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The top speed maxes out at 218 mph, which we have to imagine would make those road trips go by faster. It features McLaren’s hydraulic steering system and has a suspension that is purposefully tuned to be more accommodating on the road than other examples of what McLaren call their “Ultimate Series” of supercars.
Car & Driver said this about the car’s performance: “The Sabre is so fast, so visceral, that there are moments when your right foot will question whether full throttle is what your brain really wants.”
The doors open exactly the way they should for such a limited production hypercar and the interior features a Volcano Orange driver’s seat complemented by the Carbon Black passenger seat. That’s just a taste of how unique this car is, essentially built from a blank sheet of paper for the original owner.
Each example of the McLaren Sabre was hand-built while each customer participated in the design process, even getting their own one-on-one sessions to be sure the cars were all completed exactly as desired.
Does this car get you that experience? No, since it’s already been built. But would-be buyers can look forward to owning one of the most unique cars to ever come out of McLaren’s Woking-based facility. Bonus points for only having covered 98 miles since new! What will it cost for the privilege of watching the odometer roll over to triple digits? What’s the price of a McLaren Sabre?
Mecum estimate $4,500,000 – $5,000,000, but with prices we’ve been seeing and the sheer volume of cars that are showing up in Monterey this year, we wouldn’t be surprised if it takes more than that to bring this car home.
