Ford’s first Mustangs are considered 1964.5 model year examples – basically any Mustang built prior to September 1964. By 1965 the Mustang was well on its way to the legend that we know today.
This custom Fastback that will cross the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach sale next month is one of 64,808 Fastbacks built for the ’65 model year, but it’s so much more than even a ’65 Mustang GT.
A 289 cubic inch V8 sits under the hood, paired with a TREMEC TKO five-speed transmission. It sports an NOS Shelby 8-stack manifold converted to EFI by Imagine Injection, along with aluminum heads, roller rockers, and a Holley Terminator X that controls the 8-stack Imagine Injection fuel injection system. Bit of a step up from what you’d find under the hood of a standard ’65 Mustang!
In addition to the increased power and fuel injection this car rides on a RideTech suspension kit and includes an updated steering box and larger disc brakes. The Kona Blue exterior paint with white stripes and a Shelby-style hood have been added to give this more of a GT350-feel.

We’re just going to say this again – it has a five-speed manual! If you’re going to take this car on a road trip or a rally, you’ll appreciate that fifth gear in a way you can’t imagine unless you’ve tried a road trip with a four-speed. The Vintage Air climate control and modern stereo will add to the creature comforts that all the standard 1965 Mustangs lack. And those 18-inch wheels look pretty slick too!
