Bonhams Sells Bugatti EB110 GT in Miami

The Bugatti EB110 - Restarting the Bugatti Brand

The Bugatti EB110 GT, a standout piece of early 1990s automotive engineering, premiered on September 15, 1991. This vehicle signaled Bugatti’s bold re-entry into the supercar market. It features a powerful 3.5L quad-turbocharged V12 engine that produces approximately 550 brake horsepower, enabling it to reach an impressive top speed of 212 miles per hour, solidifying its status among the fastest cars of its time.

In addition to its remarkable performance capabilities, the EB110 GT provided a luxurious and sophisticated driving experience. The interior showcased finely crafted leather trim for superior comfort. Practicality was also addressed with optional fitted luggage, enhancing its grand touring potential. Audiophiles could enjoy a high-quality audio system developed by Nakamichi, offering an outstanding auditory experience.

This vehicle stood at the forefront of technological advancements during its era, particularly as one of the first supercars to incorporate ‘active’ aerodynamics. Its rear wing adjusted automatically according to speed to optimize downforce and stability at high speeds. Moreover, manually adjustable air flaps near the rear window allowed drivers to further customize the car’s aerodynamic profile.

The foundation of this exceptional machine is a carbon fiber chassis known for being both lightweight and incredibly robust, produced by Aérospatiale, a respected French aerospace firm. This advanced construction technique greatly enhanced the vehicle’s structural rigidity and handling abilities. The suspension setup included a double wishbone design at each wheel, ensuring precise control and a smooth ride.

Originally designed by the renowned Marcello Gandini, who contributed to other iconic supercars, the bodywork underwent refinement by Giampaolo Benedini, cousin of Romano Artioli. This collaboration resulted in the sleek, aerodynamic shape that became synonymous with the EB110.

The example offered by Bonhams|Cars in Miami, chassis ZA9AB01E0RCD39092, retains its original engine and is one of an estimated 84 EB110 Gas to be produced. It was sold after the auction for $1,375,000.
