Mecum Auctions Fox Body Mustangs
The golden age of the muscle car came to a clear, if understated ending in the 1970s. Readers of a particular age might be tempted to view the 1994 Ford Mustang as the true successor to the first and second generation models that formed the basis of so many great muscle cars, but the knowledgable enthusiast knows there’s far more to the Fox body Mustang than a cursory glance at the mid-1980s would suggest. Some of the most exciting Mustangs since the very first example left the factory sport the Fox body and several choice examples are being offered by Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis this week.
The 1989 Ford Mustang Saleen SSC is an uncommon vehicle, with production limited to just 161 units. This specific model, numbered 23, is powered by a 5.0L V8 engine outfitted with high-performance SSC heads designed by Saleen, and it features a BorgWarner T5 5-speed manual transmission. Its exterior showcases a white paint job, enhanced by distinctive front and rear fascias, a Saleen rear wing, and white 5-spoke wheels.
Inside, the car includes two-tone Cream over Gray bucket seats. This particular example also comes with several extras: a Saleen jacket, a company letter, a magazine article, and an information/specs board, which together enhance its appeal as a collectible piece with historical importance.

The 1992 Ford Mustang SAAC Mk1 Coupe marks a special partnership between Ford and the Shelby American Automobile Club to honor the original Shelby Mustangs. This particular vehicle is number 098 out of just 250 made. It boasts a customized 5.0L V8 engine, equipped with GT40 cylinder heads, an aluminum intake manifold, and a 65mm throttle body, delivering a factory-rated power output of 295 horsepower through a 5-speed manual transmission.
Aesthetically, this car features a striking Oxford White exterior paired with a black interior, highlighted by exclusive SAAC emblems and striping. Essentially, these coupes are upgraded Fox-body Mustangs that incorporate both performance enhancements and design elements reminiscent of classic Shelby models. This specific model has traveled 491 miles since new and includes important documentation like the original window sticker and SAAC paperwork, underscoring its uniqueness and importance for enthusiasts of Mustangs and Shelbys alike.

You’re not seeing double – it’s another 1992 Ford Mustang SAAC MkI Coupe that’s set to be offered by Mecum on Saturday, May 17. This is an earlier production example, number 037 as denoted by the plaque on its dash, and has covered even fewer miles than the one we just discussed – this example has covered all of 22 miles since it was new.
It was kept by its original owner until 2022 and includes a Deluxe Marti Report. It’s still on its MSO, so if the next owner wants to drive it on public roads they will have to title the car in their name and surrender the MSO.
