RM Sotheby's Set New Record with Bugatti in Paris
RM Sotheby’s Paris sale set a world record price for a new car sold at auction with the 2022 Bugatti Chiron Profilée selling for an incredible €9,792,500 – a bit more than $10.5 million as of today – following bidding in the auction room, online, and from telephone bidders.
The Bugatti Chiron Profilée had a pre-auction estimate from RM Sotheby’s of €4,200,000 – €5,500,000, meaning that the final price was more than double the low end of the auction company’s expectations. Although it doesn’t break the record for the outright most expensive Bugatti ever sold, it does join the upper echelons when it comes to Bugatti prices.
The Bugatti Chiron Profilée is a one-of-a-kind, bespoke example of the Chiron hypercar and is the final Bugatti to be sold new with the W-16, quad-turbocharged engine that is so closely associated with modern Bugattis.
RM Sotheby’s also sold a 2020 McLaren Speedtail in Paris, number 36 of the 100 total Speedtails built by McLaren. It showed just 112 km on the odometer and went for a very strong final price of €2,367,500 – a little more than $2.5 million as of today.
It wasn’t all modern hypercars in Paris as RM Sotheby’s sold a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, a matching-numbers example and beneficiary of a five-year restoration that cost more $700,000 for €1,748,750, or almost $1.9 million. This sale further demonstrates the increasing demand for the 300 SL Roadster, with prices rapidly increasing and making their way towards the value of a 300 SL Gullwing.
This was the most successful and largest auction RM Sotheby’s has held to date in Paris, with total sales of roughly €50,000,000 and 13 cars breaking seven figures.
