We’ve had the pleasure to drive a good number of Shelby Mustangs over the years. Sure, eventually they became more of a Ford product than a Shelby, at least when compared to the original GT350, but they all have that Shelby magic and Ford is planning to produce a limited run of Heritage Edition fastbacks for 2022. It will pay tribute to the original GT500 that was powered by a 428 cubic inch V8.
The Heritage Edition will be finished in Brittany Blue paint with Wimbledon White racing stripes. Fittingly, Ford Performance has engineered this to be the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built by the factory. It will be powered by a 5.2 L V8 producing 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque.
That impressive amount of power will be delivered its rear wheels by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a first-in-class feature. It will also feature race-derived driving modes and control strategies.
The base 2022 GT500 starts at $72,900 before any destination fees and taxes, while the Heritage Edition will add another $2,140 to the price. If you want to go all the way and include hand-painted stripes then it’s $12,140 on top of the base cost.
Dealer orders for the 2022 Ford Mustang GT500, including the Heritage Edition, open November 15 with delivery scheduled for the Spring of 2022.
