Still fresh from Monterey Car Week and all the remarkable classic and collector cars that were on display and offered at the various auctions, we have a bit of an itch for a project and the Stan Lucas Collection has a lot to offer in terms of cars in need of a future. While we’re not trying to tell anyone what to do, if we were looking for a long-term restoration project the choice is obvious:

The Hispano-Suiza H6B, introduced at the 1919 Paris Motor Show, featured a design influenced by the company’s aviation engineering background. Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt drew from his work on powerful V12 aircraft engines to create an automotive masterpiece. This heritage was evident in the car’s inline-six engine, which featured a lightweight aluminum block and a crankshaft milled from a single, 770-pound steel billet.

What truly set the H6B apart was its groundbreaking technology. While many rivals still used rear-only brakes, the H6B pioneered four-wheel, servo-assisted braking—a feature so effective that Rolls-Royce later licensed the patent. This innovation provided unparalleled stopping power and safety for the era. Combined with a light, rigid chassis, this powerful car earned a reputation as a rival to the very best luxury cars of its time.

The 1922 Hispano-Suiza H6B Four-Passenger Touring Phaeton that will be offered by Gooding Christie’s at the Stan Lucas Collection Auction has a unique history as it was built with custom one-off coachwork for Edsel B. Ford by Brunn & Co. Its ownership history can be tracked all the way to when it left the factory and it has been part of the Stan Lucas Collection since 1993.

This H6B is primed for its next owner to start the long and rewarding work of a full concours-quality restoration. Will we be seeing this on the lawn at Pebble Beach in a few years? We certainly hope so!

And if the Hispano-Suiza isn’t quite your style, the steam-powered 1925 Doble Series E Phaeton Deluxe would be another likely crowd pleaser at most any concours fresh off a restoration. It also never hurts to go the tried-and-true route, so be sure to check out the 1926 Duesenberg Model A Roadster – this one sits partially restored and just needs the right buyer willing to devote the time and resources to restore it to its former glory.
