World's Largest Memorabilia Auction
Mecum recently held “The World’s Largest Road Art® Auction” that added to their world’s largest motorcycle and collector car auctions, giving the auction house three annual world-record-sized sales each year. The sale was held at Mecum’s headquarters in Walworth, WI and featured everything from signs to gas pumps, posters, pedal cars and beyond.
At the end of the auction that ran from June 20-25, 92% of more than 4,000 lots were sold, totaling $10.9 million over the course of six days.
A Kelly Tires porcelain sign featuring back-to-back examples in an original ring (Lot S101), one of the only of its kind still in existence today, was one of the top sellers at this year’s auction. The very rare and highly desirable sign fetched a very respectable $265,500.
Large-scale neon signs were another popular area at the auction, with treasured specimens of vibrant vintage voltage taking eight of the top 12 sales spots. One such prized example was a Star Lanes single-sided animated neon sign (Lot S144), which became the second-highest seller at the auction with a selling price of $247,800.
Gas pump globes are becoming more and more popular, and the selection offered at the Walworth 2023 Road Art auction was undeniably one of the best offerings ever assembled, due in no small part to the 200+ genuine, premium globes from The Jeff Spanier Gas and Oil Collection taking the spotlight.
Mecum returns to Kissimmee for their Summer Special 2023 starting July 6, running through July 9.
