BMW E30 M3
BMW brought out the E30 M3 in 1986 and continued production through 1991. It was as a homologation special for the DTM and Group A racing that required 5,000 units to be built. An instant cult classic, it is a sought-after car today. However, most examples show their age with well over 100,000 miles. To find one with mileage this low is truly a unicorn.
BMW added a front and rear spoiler to the 3 series as well as flared fenders and special rocker panels for the M3. The rear window had a flatter angle than stock and the rear lid was made of lighter composite materials to add to better down force and better air flow. The drag coefficient for the M3 was 0.33 compared to 0.38 for the standard 3 series.
The brakes were also M3-specific with improved calipers, discs, and master cylinder. The engine was the S14 DOHC 4-cylinder producing 192 horsepower. Its redline was 7,250 RPM. This engine was paired with a Gertag 5-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential. Acceleration was impressive for its day, running 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds at 92 MPH, and a top speed of 141 MPH.
The example being offered on Bring a Trailer is finished in Diamond Black Metallic paint over a Pearl Beige leather interior. It is fitted with an electric sunroof, sport seats, onboard computer, air conditioning, and an AM/FM cassette stereo. Window sticker, owner’s manuals, and a clean Carfax accompany the car.
At the time of writing bidding on this 1988 BMW M3 is at $101,000 with 4 days remaining. We expect this unicorn will bring $175,000.
